The Role of the Finance Director

The role of the Finance Director is multi-faceted. Before appointing one, it essential to understand what a Finance Director can or should do.

In his book The Role of the Finance Director, Terry Carroll devotes individual chapters to key elements of the FD's role and treats the Finance Director as

  • director
  • strategist
  • general manager
  • planning manager
  • relationship manager
  • financial manager
  • treasury manager
  • (internal)auditor re corporate governance)
  • corporate finance manager
  • e-commerce manager
  • risk manager
  • resources manager
  • information manager
  • quality manager
  • a professional

It is clear that a Finance Director is much more than simply an accountant. Indeed, as Carroll states:

..for the FD, leadership is about leading the business in partnership with the Chief Executive Officer, especially the financial and often mainstream strategy of the business....the FD must rise above the routine to work and relate across the organization at a strategic level, one minute offering advice, quidance and support on business and financial consequences and another relating outside the organization to a growing number army of investors, shareholders, stakeholders, the media, regulators and the public at large.

However, given the nature of the work that they are involved with, it is not always necessary for a company to engage a full-time Finance Director.

For early stage companies,a part-time Finance Director providing high-level input at significant times in the business life cycle will be appropriate.

Axiom-e was established to provide high-quality staff - all of whom have been Finance Director of various companies - to provide this to your company.
